Case Study
Improving Precision And Reducing
Setup Time with a Custom Dual Linear
Guide Stage Actuator
CLIENT BACKGROUND:
The client is a prominent company in the life sciences industry, focusing on developing laboratory devices for NGS sample preparation and automation solutions used in various scientific applications.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Type:
Dual Linear Guide Stage Actuator (DWM)Stroke Length:
100mm, 100mm, 300mmSpeed:
1 inch per secondEnvironmental Conditions:
LaboratoryPower Supply/Voltage: 24V
Mounting Options:
Custom mountDuty Cycle:

CHALLENGE:
The client was using a competitor’s linear guide system due to cost constraints. However, the system, which comprised plastic sliding on metal, exhibited too much compliance and lacked the stiffness required for precise operations in their laboratory environment.
CUSTOM SOLUTION:
Over the course of a year, we collaborated closely with the client to design and refine the custom dual linear guide stage actuator. The solution incorporated custom base plates, which reduced the number of components, enhancing both cost-efficiency and durability.
Unique Customizations included:
• End-of-stroke sensors
• Custom base plates to reduce component count and improve robustness
RESULTS:
The custom base plates were integral in reducing the number of components required for the client’s design, resulting in both cost savings and improved operational robustness.
EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENTS
The stiffer design
allowed for faster
machine setup times.
PRODUCTIVITY
GAINS
The system did not require machine leveling or homing, as the components were repeatable and precise.
OPERATIONAL COST SAVINGS
Operators no longer needed to perform time-consuming homing procedures, saving valuable time.
DOWNTIME
REDUCTION
The improved design minimized compliance issues, reducing the need for maintenance.
